The Program in Epidemiology offers interdisciplinary instruction and research opportunities leading to the M.S. degree in epidemiology. The program has research strengths in the following areas: cancer epidemiology, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and neurological disease epidemiology, as well as some aspects of epidemiologic methods, and environmental and occupational epidemiology.
The M.S. program in Epidemiology is designed to provide training in epidemiologic methods to professionals in a variety of related fields and to considering careers in epidemiology. It is recommended that applicants to serve as an introduction to epidemiology to those with baccalaureate degrees who are the M.S. program have previous course work in biology and statistics or mathematics. To receive the degree, students are expected to obtain a thorough grounding in epidemiologic methods and applied biostatistics, and to demonstrate research skills through completion of a master's thesis. In addition, a curriculum in clinical research methods has been established specifically to enhance the training of clinical investigators. The clinical epidemiology track of the M.S. program in epidemiology has been designed to provide training in epidemiologic methods, statistical analysis, and other areas essential to patient-oriented clinical research to clinical investigators in training (typically in the fellowship stage).
The graduate program in epidemiology is designed to prepare individuals for careers in research and teaching of epidemiology. It is recommended that applicants have previous course work in biology and statistics or mathematics. Normally, successful applicants will have a master's degree in a relevant field or at least two years of relevant research experience.
Please note that the Epidemiology Program is not a participant in the Home Programs in the Biosciences described at the beginning of this brochure. Applications should be submitted directly to the address below and will only be considered for admission into the Epidemiology Program. The deadline for receipt of applications is January 15th for non-clinical M.S. applicants and July 15th for applicants to the clinical track of the M.S. program for admission beginning the following autumn quarter. General admission information, the link to the on-line application, and a link for requesting information about specific programs or a paper applications form may be found at the following website: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/registrar/admission.
