About our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Partnerships
We have existing collaborations with sixteen Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the four Historically Black Medical Colleges (HBMCs). Ten of our partner schools are in the top 25 Black Universities as ranked by US News and World Report (2); Spelman College, Howard University, and Xavier University taking the top three spots respectively.
Through these collaborations we are working to develop intentional partnerships through the following goals:
1) focusing on the lack of African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) students pursuing degrees (undergraduate and graduate) in the biosciences and medicine.
2) developing initiatives aimed at addressing social belonging and identity.
3) evaluating institution partner perspectives on student preparation for, and retention at predominately white institutions.
4) engaging HBCU, HBMC, and Stanford faculty and staff in supporting underrepresented students in the biosciences and medicine; and
5)sharing information about Stanford’s interdisciplinary PhD programs and summer research opportunities.
